Let's Go Swimming!

Hooray for pools + summer!

First- the Base Pool. Sign up for swimming lessons through Outdoor Rec. They have 3 different sessions with different skill levels. The lessons are in the morning and free swim starts at 1p. Outdoor Rec also sells pool passes and family pool passes. As you come in the base gates, and start onto the round-about, Outdoor Rec is on the first right off the round-about. The building is on your right hand side and has a canoe over the entry.

Second- Altus Swimming Complex. This is the pool for the city of Altus. It is managed by the Parks and Rec department. I received a very full printed spreadsheet of times and schedules, but I haven't been able to find it on the City Parks & Rec website. (If you have a copy, please email me.) From what I see, the enrollment for swimming classes are May 28th and 29th.
Session 1 - June 1-11
Session 2 - June 15-25
Session 3 - June 29 - July 9

Open swim at the city pool is from 1p-4p then 5p-8p, 7 days a week, and the cost is $3. Swim lessons appear to be at various times and skill levels in the mornings, M-Th.

-------------------------
Again, if you have either of these schedules electronically, please email me- reannalilydesigns@hotmail.com. Have a great summer!

Applebee's

Just a quick note: The Applebee's in Altus no longer has kid-night on Tuesdays. It has been moved to Wednesdays. I'm guessing they didn't want to compete with the McD's Tuesday night kid-meal-deal... but who knows. Just wanted to pop in and let you know, so you don't accidentally get stuck at a table with 6, yes 6, kids and have to explain full price is not an option. Go forth and eat cheap! If you have any other locations/times to recommend for a good deal on a kids-meal please email me or Audrey.

Tamarack Road Closing for Transformer Move

ALTUS, OKLAHOMA, April 16, 2009/--After years of planning and work, the new Veterans Substation, located at Veterans and Tamarack, is ready to receive the transformer that is the center of the substation operations. The transformer will be moved from its present location at the Tamarack Substation on West Tamarack on Tuesday, April 21. The move will begin at 8:00 AM on Tuesday and is expected to take approximately 10 hours. To facilitate the move, parts of West and East Tamarack will be closed in sequence as the transformer progresses to its new site. For safety reasons, the closings will include all public and private access to Tamarack, including streets, driveways, entrances, exits and alleys on Tamarack at some time during the move. Citizens are advised to allow for the closings and plan alternate routes as needed. The longest closings will be while the transformer is taken out of the Tamarack Substation and when it is being moved into the Veterans Substation; the actual transport will take less time. After the transformer has passed each section, the accesses will be reopened to traffic as soon as possible. Beginning at 8:00 AM, the sequence of the closings will be as follows:

Section 1
The intersection of Bradford St. and Market Rd. will be closed to all north bound traffic,
Tamarack and Market Road will be closed to all east bound traffic,
The west entrance to the Southwest Area Vo-Tech will be closed to all traffic, and
Flamingo Road and Tamarack will be closed to all traffic while the transformer is removed from the Tamarack Substation and begins moving eastward. This part of the move may take several hours and all intersections will remain closed until the transformer has passed Tamarack and Main.

Section 2
On Tamarack the east entrance to the Vo-Tech, the entrance to the Health Department, all the southern entrances and exits to Western Oklahoma State College and all northern entrances and exits to the Red River Federal Credit Union will be closed to all traffic, Robin and Tamarack will be closed to all traffic, Main and Tamarack will be closed to all traffic and all intersections will remain closed until the transformer has passed Tamarack and Main.

Section 3
Tamarack Road between Main Street and Park Lane will be closed to all eastbound traffic and
All public and private entrances and exits to the south side of Tamarack between Main and Park Lane will be closed until the transformer has passed Park Lane.

Section 4
Tamarack east of Park Lane and Veterans north of Falcon Road will be closed to all traffic,
All entrances
North bound traffic on Veterans will be diverted onto Falcon Road,
East bound traffic on Veterans will be diverted south on Park Lane,
All public and private entrances and exits to both sides of Tamarack east of Park Lane will be closed, and
All public and private entrances and exits to both sides of Veterans north of Falcon will be closed until the transformer has been placed in the Veterans substation, a procedure that could take several hours. Once the transformer is in place, all traffic on all streets will be returned to normal.
Altus Power would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation during the move and remind anyone with questions or concerns about the move or the closings to contact us at 580-481-2240. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Time to Plant-

Its almost time to start planting here in Altus. If you're looking for some tomato plants or some peppers; maybe an herb garden or perhaps a flower bed- You have to stop by Southwest Garden Center. Its a little over 7 miles north of "the square" on HWY 283. (almost to Blair) As you drive north on 283, the green houses are on your left. The staff is so very friendly & knowledgable and the prices are excellent. I priced plants at... a major discount chain... only to find tomato plants were $3.50/ea. After I picked my jaw up from the floor and drove the short bit to Southwest Garden Center, I was thrilled to learn their plants start at $.39. Yes thirty-nine-cents. Support local! And enjoy the afternoon picking out plants for the kids, the garden and your home. Happy Spring!

Its still two weeks away, but its supposed to be the big awesome event in Southwest Oklahoma!

From wimgo.com:
Join us for this annual snake hunt featuring a bus safari, guided caravans, flea market, snake tent, butcher shop, souvenir booth, photo booth, fried rattlesnake meat, square dance, live band, and Derby Princess Contest. Free admission.

I've personally talked to a couple friends who work in the Quilt Shop in Mangum (on the square), and they gave me the scoop on the festival. Plan to park a couple blocks away, as the Mangum downtown is transformed into a huge flea market fair with vendors of all kinds. You can even eat rattlesnake, should you be so brave. They mentioned you can take a picture with a rattlesnake wrapped around your shoulders. Bring your money, sunblock and a stroller for the wildest event in April.

If you've been to the Rattlesnake Round Up in past years, please leave a comment and tell us what to expect, share your tips, & make your recommendations! Thanks.

Just Between Friends Children's Consignment Sale

For those who are interested, there is a "Just Between Friends" Consignment Sale in Lawton coming up soon from April 24-25. This is a great way to both buy and sell baby/kids clothes, toys, dvd's, books, blankets, baby furniture, maternity clothes, etc. If you consign items, you get to shop a day early. Anyone can consign items- you set the price and receive 65% of the sales (70% if you volunteer at least three hours.) Even if you don't consign items and just go to shop, you will still be surprised what nice, quality things you can buy at a fraction of the cost. For more info, click here.

To see the YouTube video of "Why We Love JBF", click here. (I'd recommend this video to anyone who hasn't been to a consignment fair of this type before.)

If you do decide to consign, please mention that you were referred by Audrey Tolle...thanks!!

Blog Authors Needed

I am needing one or two more people to add on to this blog as "authors". I will be having my third baby in a few weeks and want other people to be able to post events and such on here as well. I love doing this service, but feel if there were even more "eyes and ears" out there looking for things to do, it would be more beneficial to all. Please email me at nateandaudrey@yahoo.com if you would be interested in this. Thanks!!

Altus Yard Sales

Many of you have told me about the websites http://www.sillyardsales.com and http://www.craigslist.com as ways of buying/selling items to those in the local area. Well, I was just told about a new site for Altus similar to the Ft. Sill Yard Sale website. It is http://www.altusyardsales.com and is a place where you can post items you want to buy/sell or post an actual garage sale that you are having.
If you have some things sitting around your house that you want to try and sell, snap a picture and put it on their website. The more people that hear about it and post their items, the more of an excellent resource this can be. Enjoy!

Going Out of Business Sale!!!!

For those who haven't heard, there is a Going Out of Business Sale at Aunt B's Attic currently going on. Tomorrow (Thursday) all clothing and shoes will be .25 each and on Monday, Feb. 16th, there will be a bag sale (fill a bag for $1.00). Monday will be the last day the store is open.

Aunt B's Attic directions: Leaving the base from the front gate, continue straight on Falcon through the stoplight at Veterans. It will on your right shortly after crossing that stoplight near a little strip mall with a bait shop, a liquor store, and a beauty shop.

Also, the owner is trying to sell the business for $3,000, if you or anyone you know would be interested.
